1. WHY NOT NOTHING?
"Let's get some of the God squad in the dock, where they
belong"

"I wrote this song a few years ago when I was feeling
completely disillusioned with all the establishments. It's a
ranting two chord rock 'n' roll tune that's asking why we
can't accept that there's no greater power. I first heard
the phrase 'Why not nothing?' from my father-in-law, and I
think it conjures a lot of ideas in your head. It's not some
hippy statement, it's more like an anarchist concept, why
can't we accept that there's nothing?

2. MUSIC IS POWER
"If the melody's timeless, it won't let you down"

"I was driving home from the South of France one night on my
own playing a track that Curtis Mayfield had written for
someone else, and I just started singing my melody over the
top. With this song I'm trying to stretch this thing I've
been doing since 'Bittersweet Symphony' with a three chord
sample that takes you on a melodic journey. Lyrically, I've
always believed that music and melody are so powerful and so
under-valued.

3. BREAK THE NIGHT WITH COLOUR
"Time for me to break my cover/Time for me to move ahead"

"I suppose this about breaking through depression and
darkness and finding light. I wrote it on a harpsichord and
it was probably the first thing I recorded for the album,
about three years ago."

4. WORDS JUST GET IN THE WAY
"When your back's against the wall, there's noone left to
call, call on me"

"I recorded three different versions of this and, typically,
decided to go with the first one, although I did splice in
some strings in from another session. Essentially it's a
very self-explanatory love song."

5. KEYS TO THE WORLD
"I've got the keys to the world/Oh mixed up world"

"It's quite tribalistic sounding this one. It's about
someone who's been left out of society since he was a kid
and he's freefalling, but I've got the keys to the world and
I'm saying: I can rescue you, but when we get there what we
gonna do? I remember the phrase first came to me when I went
to Rome just after I first became famous and I got trapped
in this shop with hundreds of people outside trying to get
to me. And I was looking at them from this shop thinking:
Christ man, I've got the keys to the world, and when I've
got there I'm hiding in a shop!"

6. SWEET BROTHER MALCOLM
"When it all comes crashing down and the press move in to
town"

"I think this has the feel of an old folk tune. It's about
the floral tributes you see when you're driving around.
Sometimes you ignore them and sometimes you think about the
pain involved and the stories behind them. This is a story
about a couple of characters, one a young kid involved in a
high speed chase, another guy some pillar of the community
who's being arrested. I wanna write about the kind of lost
England that Ray Davies talks about. The village green's
still there, but there's police tape and there's flowers in
sellophane."

7. CRY TILL THE MORNING
"First time that I ever saw you/Knew nothing would ever be
the same"
"This was one of the songs that came out at the end of the
recording. I wrote it very quickly on a piano and kept it on
the same chords all the way through. Really it's about two
people coming together, it's a love story and a personal
exorcism at the same time. Like, how do two people ever get
together with so much shit and history?"

8. WHY DO LOVERS
"Slow down stranger/You know that you're in danger/These
demons I've got they are major"

"This is one of my favourite tunes on the record, it just
sounded beautiful the night we put it down. It's the love
story from the previous song continuing. The two lovers are
together now, they've gone through the pantomime and they're
getting to the real thing. They're asking each other are you
prepared to carry my shit as well? When I look in the mirror
now, I don't see much of a guy there, are you prepared to
help me through this? Do you want me? What connected us in
the first place? This is the point when relationships become
really interesting, when you move past the peacock feathers
and start to get to the truth."

9. SIMPLE SONG
"Yeah I'm happy to feel this way/Cos I don't know another
way"

"This is the oldest song on the album, I wrote it five or
six years ago. It popped up on a tape and I thought: woah,
what a tune, I wanna re-record that and get it on the next
record. It's a short rock 'n' roll pop song, probably the
most melodic on the record. Lyrically, make of it what you
want - as it says, it's a simple song."

10. WORLD KEEPS TURNING
"World keeps turning, everybody's learning"

"I wanted to end the record on a positive note. Lyrically it
still turns to the themes that really nomatter what I do and
nomatter how hard I try, I'm flawed. But it's saying I'm
gonna give you love anyway. Y'know, I'm gonna do my best
among this madness."
