[Review]United Nations of SoundDifferent Gear, Still Speeding - the verve - verve中文网

Remember Brit-pop? Nearly 20 years have passed since that trend reclaimed the brashness and color of classic U.K. pop for a new age. During the Blair regime,England swung to the strut of Supergrass, the Verve and the divine rivalry of Oasis vs. Blur.

Of course, none of those names had the same meaning or durability in the States. But new guises for several key members of the Brit-pop movement has given them a fresh shot at attention.

The singers from both Oasis and the Verve have recast themselves — the former by fronting the new band Beady Eye, the latter via a tweaked solo persona, the United Nations of Sound.

After Oasis' ?Gallagher brothers finally had one squabble too many, the singing half (Liam) formed Beady Eye with three other band holdovers (guitarists Andy Bell and Gem Archer, plus drummer Chris Sharrock).

The title of their debut, "Different Gear, Still Speeding" boldfaces their intent to follow in their forebears' footsteps. It's wall-to-wall '90s Brit-pop, so proud of its debt to history it seems immune to accusations of recycling. They even called one song "Beatles andStones," though it actually borrows more from the Who's "My Generation." Its lyrics show Gallagher's usual nerve: "I'm gonna stand the test of time/like the Beatles and the Stones." He won't, of course, but at least his project evades some of Oasis' recent ruts.

Freed from the stagnant songwriting and overexercised Beatles fetish of Noel Gallagher, the new band finds more strutting riffs of its own. But the production only intensifies the earlier band's depressing density, giving the music a portly gait. The fresh riffs do give Liam new licks to savor, but none bring you closer to him. He's still a smug brat, a pose he's too old for to fully forgive.

Ashcroft takes the opposite tack: He's sincerity personified. More, his new production aims for clarity and grandeur. Ashcroft has always been a sonic maximalist, but seldom has he pulled it off with such keen resonance. Here, he has made a lush salute to American soul, although no one would mistake his mopey voice for anyone not a member of the rainy empire.

Ashcroft's songs tarry longer than some of his melodies deserve, but the overall effect is winning in the end. While the sound may not unite nations, at least it moves him beyond the rear-view vision of Brit-pop into a contemporary world of wonder.

Richard Ashcroft plays Bowery Ballroom March 23.
