"How I got to go on an American tour with the Verve was an unlikely combination of circumstances.

Following the falling out of Richard Ashcroft and Verve guitarist Nick McCabe, I got a call from Richard asking me to join the band for their upcoming American tour. I was flattered but confused. Why me? There must be dozens of great rock guitarists who could do the job. Picking a Pedal Steel guitarist with psychedelic pretensions was, to put it mildly, lateral thinking.

It turned out that Richard's wife, Kate Radley loved the work I had done on the Spiritualized album 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space'. Her former partner Jason Pierce, being the leader of that group.

The American tour was a gas. The Verve were just breaking in America, so no expense was spared. We rehearsed for a week in Chicago and then embarked on the tour.
It's the closest I've ever come to being a rock star.

The final gig of the tour, and the last the Verve ever did, was at Slane Castle in Dublin.
The reception we received was overwhelming, right down to the Garda escort out of the site under cover of the firework display, and then back to the hotel for a night of end of tour rock 'n'roll excess.

Although I had no prior opinion of the Verve's appeal, I came away from the experience with a great respect for them and especially Richard's vocal and songwriting talent"

"During my short time touring with the Verve, Richard Ashcroft and I had established a good working relationship. So, following the announcement of the Verve's disbandment, it wasn't much of a surprise to receive a call from him asking me to work on his first solo album, which was to be called 'Alone With Everybody'.

The album was recorded at Olympic Studios in Barnes, London, and produced by Chris Potter.

The musicians included Verve drummer Pete 'Sobo' Salisbury, programmer Steve Sidelnyk, Pino Paladino on bass, myself on Steel Guitars, Richard's wife Kate on keyboards and the signature string arrangements of Will Malone.

Throughout the recording Richard was in high spirits and managed to maintain a strong band feel to the album.

In my opinion, 'Alone With Everybody' was an improvement on the Verve sound, as Richard wasn't hampered by the petty squabbling that was endemic to the band.

Unfortunately many fans of the band, including many music journalists, felt betrayed by Richard's disbandment of the Verve, and created an atmosphere in which it was hard for him to progress.

Nonetheless, the first single 'A Song For The Lovers' went top ten in the UK charts, and the album went to number one.

Following this promising start, Richard and band, including myself, toured throughout 2000 in the UK, Europe and Japan, with high hopes.

High spots on the tour included the V2000 Festival, a storming gig at the late lamented Christiana in Copenhagen and some wild times in Tokyo"
