It might have been Richard Ashcroft in The Verve alumni who stole the solo glory, but guitarist Nick McCabe was widely regarded to be the group's biggest talent.

During his on-off-on-again-off-again tenure in the Wigan band, McCabe was (by most accounts) a player who inspired awe; ask any other guitarist to give you 10 clean takes and you'd get 10 clean tasks, one producer observed, ask McCabe and he'd give you 10 original moments.

It's odd, then, that McCabe never swapped The Verve for another band, instead becoming wingman to several star musicians - until three years ago when he established Black Ships, now Black Submarine, with Verve bassist Simon Jones and released the glorious Kurofune EP: 25 minutes of soaring 1960s psychedelia that sounded as now as it did from a time back then.

Unsurprisingly, his tentative return to the live circuit (he'll speak once tonight, to apologise for taking too long tuning up), coupled with the fact that Manchester is their first of only two UK shows, could have sold out at the tiny Deaf Institute several times over - to old Verve diehards alone. Even Stone Roses bassist Mani is here, adding to the feeling that this is a bit of a moment.

The eponymous opening track is spellbinding but wanders an otherwise featureless landscape, Amelia Tucker's vocals sat too low in the mix to decipher her siren call. On stage, tracks from their debut album New Shores have a harder, rockier edge - think Lamb with a Spinal Tap approach to amp volume - but even in the midst of the 1990s psych epic of Is This All We Feel there's nothing that drowns the distinctive signature of McCabe's soundscape of tumbling chords.

In this old lecture hall, McCabe still has plenty of musical lessons to teach. Everything That Happened To Me Is You is a romantic slow burner that finally showcases Davide Rossi's extraordinary violin skills, while McCabe's 12-string guitar sounds swoonsome on You've Been Here Before. They save single Here So Rain until last - a shame really, since it's here that Tucker proves why she was chosen as the permanent frontwoman over the original revolving door plan.

It's a softly-softly start, but just because someone has already written their place in musical history doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to start again and hit the ground jogging.
